Sitting, Waiting, Wishing in Traffic

Nov 23

“Sit in that six lane back up traffic
Horns are honking, I’ve about had it
I’m looking for an exit sign
Gotta get out of here get it all of my mind
And like a memory from your grandpa’s attic
A song comes slipping through the radio static
Changin’ my mood, a little George Strait 1982”
(“Take a Back Road” Rodney Atkins)

Traffic. Never a word that any driver wants to hear as they’re getting ready to go for a drive in their car. Alas, for those with a job that starts or lets out at the peak of rush hour, it is pretty inevitable that you will wind up in a car jam sooner or later (if not daily). Although being backed up on the freeway as if you are attending a stressful tailgate party isn’t ideal, with a few simple pleasures traffic can end up being bearable (maybe even fun)!

  •  Car jam! “Bohemian Rhapsody” anyone? C’mon, we’re sure you know the words, or can at least make an awesome version of the words yourself. How about that movie Tommy Boy? If you’re lucky enough to have someone in the car with you, you and your companion can have a car jamming session much like Chris Farley and David Spade did to REM’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” Not a finer moment.
  • Scream loudly so people deem you crazy! It might make awesome conversation to ease their traffic frustration and it’s almost guaranteed to help you blow off some steam. It’s always nice to help others while helping yourself, right?
  • Take a few deep breaths in an out. Sometimes all you need is a little relaxation! Concentration on your breathing is probably as close to a spa as you will get to at this point anyway.
  • Think of all the awesome things you will be able to do once you are free to drive at a quicker pace or home. Is it a Friday? Even better; welcome to the weekend! Plan out some awesome times that are to come.
  • Make car noises. Yes, it may sound silly, but if you really think about it, wouldn’t you rather pretend that you are racing in NASCAR instead of sitting in this awful traffic jam?
  • Scope out your dream car. Traffic is filled with tons of different types of people, which means tons of different cars. Your favorite car is bound to be found somewhere!
  • Remember that movie American Graffiti? If so, then you may remember how the characters in the film would pick up gals from driving around on the boulevard! When no cars are in motion it might be easier since none of you can move. Maybe you were meant to be in this traffic to find the love of your life! (There is hope that movie moments can come to life.)
  • Count. Cars are the new sheep (but these are not meant for falling asleep, so please don’t be confused)! Try and see how many cars you can pass. It’ll make you feel like you are ahead of the game!
  • People watching may sound like a creepy thing, but we all do it and there is no secret about it! So whilst checking out the passerby, make the best out of it! Perhaps guess what kind of job they have? Anything!
  • If there is someone else in the car with you, play some car games! I Spy will never go out of style when it comes to traffic. If you’re too cool for this game though, think of one yourself. Creating games is always more fun anyway!

There are an abundance of activities that can be done during the time of sitting in a rush hour pickle that are safe! Always make sure that even during the fun times in the car you remain to be a defensive driver that is alert of your surroundings.
