Excuses People Give for Breaking Traffic Laws

Girl in red car has been pulled over. Cop walking over to issue ticket.

Ever been pulled over? Most all of us have. Whether or not we receive a traffic violation after seeing those flashing red and blue lights, we normally have our excuses ready for when the police officer comes to the side of our car door and trust me, they’ve heard them all. Some people try to be funny, several try to flirt their way out (at least in the movies they do. I’m not positive if this happens in real life), while others are being completely serious. However, breaking the law is still breaking the law! Here are some serious and some not-so-serious excuses given to police officers after being pulled over:

  1. “Everyone else was doing it!”
  2. “Officer, I don’t know if it would make a difference or not, but we just got married. We were behind on time because of the airport difference in time zones, so we thought our plane was leaving very soon for our honeymoon.”
  3. “I was on my way to an emergency.”
  4. “Hurry up and give me the ticket! My baby needs a diaper change and I’m on my way to go get more.”
  5. “Sorry, officer, I didn’t realize my radar wasn’t plugged in.”
  6. “I know that I was doing 55 in a 35 mile per hour zone. I’ve been arguing with my teenage daughter and the more she talked to madder I got. Are you going to write me up or what?”
  7. “I’m lost and unfamiliar with the roads.”
  8. “I missed my turn” or “I missed my exit.”
  9. “I really have to use the bathroom! BY the way, do you know where the nearest public restroom is?”
  10. “I’m just helping out a friend, officer. I wasn’t even supposed to be driving.”
  11. “I didn’t know my taillight was broken.”
  12. “I was trying to avoid the squirrel in the road.”
  13. “But my GPS said this was the right thing to do.”
  14. “I was just trying to keep up with traffic.”

Although the list above is in no particular order, I thought I would share this bit of information:
According to Insurance.com’s recent survey, the most-used excuse given to officers is “I couldn’t see the sign telling me not to do it!”, which is said by 20.4% of people.
